TEDtalks : Work and Life Balance – Nigel Marsh

If you are not going to design your life, someone will do it for you.

Certain job and career choices are fundamentally incompatible with being meaningfully engaged on a day to day basis with a young family.

Government and corporations aren’t going to solve this issue for us.

It is up to us individuals to take control and responsibility for the type of life we want to live.

If you don’t design your life, someone else will design it for you., and you may just not like their idea of balance.

We have to be responsible for setting and enforcing the boundaries that we want in our life.

Small things matter. Being more balanced doesn’t mean dramatic upheaval in your life. With the smallest investment in the right places, you can radically transform the quality of your relationships and the quality of your life.

It can transform society, because if enough people do it, we can change society’s definition of success. Away from the moronically simplistic notion that the person with the most money when he dies wins, to a more fruitful and balanced definition of what a life well-lived looks like.

Steve Jobs – on creativity and design

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people.

William James’ bear

“Our natural way of thinking about… emotions is that the mental perception of some fact excites the mental affection called emotion, and that this latter state of mind gives rise to the bodily expression. My thesis on the contrary is that the bodily changes follow directly the PERCEPTION of the exciting fact, and that our feeling of the same changes as they occur is the emotion”

Flow : minds and thoughts => bodily reactions => mind’s perception of physiological conditions => emotions

Apparently, mind is still the most powerful thing on earth.

Magic word, Yet

Get into the habit of using the magic word, YET.

That is, don’t say, “I can’t do it. I don’t know how to do it. I can’t figure it out.”

Instead say, “I can’t do it YET. I don’t know how to do it YET. I can’t figure it out YET.”

That simple three letter word has the power to change your negative thinking into possibility thinking.

– from Changing Attitude

one of my favorites from Steve Jobs

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Of roses and foxes

“You are not at all like my rose,” he said. “As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world.”

You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

– from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Whatever roses and foxes could mean to you.
